Absolute Distance Perception Underwater and Improvement through Training

چکیده

A series of experiments was performed to obtain direct estimates of absolute distance under water, and to determine if judgment accuracy can be improved through training. Distance was underor over-estimated, depending to a large extent on water turbidity, which increased the magnitude of judgments. Also, whereas the power-function exponent for distance estimation in air was slightly less than 1.0, exponents in water were greater than 1. 0 and increased with increased turbidity. Divers quickly learned to make accurate judgments when they were informed of the correct distance after each of a series of judgments, but training did not adequately transfer to another body of water when there were large differences in turbidity. The results have implications for the training of divers.

Improvement of Absolute Distance Estimation Underwater: Use of Monocular Motion Parallax

The possible value of monocular motion parallax for improving distance perception under water was investigated. Submerged subjects either kept their heads stationary or rotated their heads about a vertical axis while judging the distance of objects placed 4-15 ft. away. Both before and after training with feedback to increase judgment accuracy, head movement did not significantly improve perfor...

Motion parallax and absolute distance.

The accuracy of absolute distance estimation based on monocular motion parallax was determined both before and after specific training. With the usual distance information eliminated, subjects either held their heads stationary, or rhythmically rotated their heads from side to side, while judging the distance of stimuli placed 4-15 ft. away. Before training, head movement produced more accurate...

Action-specific effects underwater.

Action-specific effects on perception are apparent in terrestrial environments. For example, targets that require more effort to walk, jump, or throw to look farther away than when the targets require less effort. Here, we examined whether action-specific effects would generalize to an underwater environment. Instead, perception might be geometrically precise, rather than action-specific, in an...

Improving absolute distance estimation in clear and in turbid water.

Since the errors made in estimating distance under water are dependent on the degree of water turbidity, improvement through training in one body of water will not transfer to another body of water if there is a large difference in turbidity. This experiment demonstrated that the transfer problem can be overcome by training divers under different turbidity conditions so that they learn to tailo...

Relative cues and absolute distance perception.

I I t is possible, in theory, for the simultaneous occurrence of several different relative cues i of distances to increase the veridicality of the perception of absolute distance. To test whether I this actually occurs, a three-dimensional display was viewed monocularly while moving the head laterally, under conditions in which some error in perceived absolute distance was expected. The percei...
